The Doom Slayer has returned from Hell to find that the Earth has succumbed to a Demon Invasion. Porting and optimization masters Panic Button stepped up yet again to work their magic and 9 months later, we can rip and tear all over again on our favorite hybrid console.ĭOOM ETERNAL follows on from the events of DOOM (2016). The Nintendo Switch version of the game did not release alongside the platforms and still required some much-needed optimization for it to run on the hardware. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, DOOM ETERNAL launched a day forward in certain retail outlets to minimize crowding in their stores. The game was originally scheduled for March 20 th and coincided with the release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on March 19 th, 2020. The Nintendo Switch itself has six titles available from the original DOOM (1993) to the latest entry in the series, DOOM ETERNAL.ĭOOM ETERNAL is the direct sequel to DOOM (2016). Since the first game released back in 1993, there have been about nine main installments/reiterations, four spin-off games, and countless rereleases on almost every gaming platform in existence. The DOOM series has been going for a long time. I don't understand how Spear of Destiny finally managed to make it out unscathed (along with its bonus missions) while Keen 6 lies dormant. Distribution rights for Keen 6 were turned over to the now long-dead publisher FormGen, but so was Spear of Destiny at the time, and that too was stuck in copyright hell for many years. I don't understand why Keen 6 is still in copyright limbo though. I would much, much rather that they port the original Commander Keen games over. In hindsight, Wolfenstein 3D seems like a glorified proof of concept (though a very ambitious one for its time), but consumer technology needed to catch up for the iD boys to realise their vision, and boy, did they blow it out of the water when they made DOOM. DOOM, on the other hand, is still every bit as fun now as it was back in 1993, and it well and truly set the benchmark for what would become the FPS genre.
